For you first-timers and maybe not-so first time visitors to Cancun, there are really two Cancuns to get to know. Locals know them as the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) and El Centro (downtown), and both have their charm and pitfalls, advantages and disadvantages. We’ll take a look at a few highlights from both the city and the island here, to help you make the most of your vacation time and dollar. Generally, the Hotel zone is a bit more touristy, expensive, and party happy whereas downtown Cancun el Centro has slightly more culture and some more affordable living options in the form of budget hotels and cheaper restaurants.
Hotel Zone
Shopping: Luxury Avenue, the newer section of Plaza Kukulcan, is home to the world-renown boutiques like Cartier and Louis Vuitton. Just ten minutes away is La Isla, an outdoor shopping village with over 200 shops, restaurants, bars, and you can catch the game at the world’s smallest Hooters!

Renting a car gives you the freedom to fully experience your surroundings. Like most popular vacation spots, Cancun has numerous car rentals shops to choose from. To make your life easier I have taken a look at a few online and compared weekly and daily prices for both economy class cars and Jeep Wrangler. In order to keep the searches as accurate as possible I used June 1st to June 8th 2008 as my search date. All prices are in USD and include taxes. Please keep in mind that these prices are subject to change and these prices should only be used as an example.
1. Auto-rental-cancun.com
These prices were the best I came across. To rent an economy class car for a week it would cost $211.20 and include unlimited milage, loss damage waiver (LDW), collision damage waiver (CDW), additional liability insurance (ALI), and personal accident insurance (PAI). If you are under 25 it would cost an additional $5 a day which would total a little less then $250. This car can be rented at about $30 a day.
For a Jeep Wrangler you should expect to pay around $55 a day or $369 with everything included (around $410 if you are under 25)
2. Econocarrental.com
An economy class car would cost $35 a day or $219 a week and included ALI, CDW, LDW, PAI, transportation to pick up the car, legal assistance, and two drivers would be permitted. An additional fee of $5 a day for drivers under 25.
A Jeep would cost $69 a day or $379 with the same features as above. Read more
