While currently living in Thailand, there are numerous beautiful beach destinations. Each with their own flavor and culture, but there are a handful that offer the Cancun-like Resort, beach, and luxury experience. So if you want to make it to Asia but want an all inclusive experience with a few treks to nearby historical sites like the Mayan ruins once and awhile, check out this list of Thai Beach resort destinations that are Cancun-esque.
Koh Samui, Thailand
A quick easy flight and ferry away from Bangkok, Samui is a holiday lovers paradise. From cheap beach bungalows to all inclusive super luxury resorts, Samui has a lot for those searching for something a little different than Cancun, but still Western and very well developed.
Getting there: Fly to Suratthani from Bangkok with Air Asia for pennies, and ferry to Koh Samui. Flights also available direct to Samui with Bangkok Airways.

Phuket, Thailand
The long time favorite of Western travelers, Phuket is a highly developed destination in Thailand’s southern provinces. There’s a range of everything for lodging. There are numerous beaches easily explored by dirt cheap moped rentals, or you can always sit on your resorts beach. For public beaches, Kata and Karon are my favorites. For getting out of Phuket, there are innumerous day or overnight trips available to nearby islands of Phi Phi, etc. which I very highly recommend partaking in for a cool $30.
Getting there: Phuket is a well frequented destination and has numerous airline connections. Once again AirAsia is the cheapest and best price with fares often found for $40 each way from bangkok.
Koh Samet
Arguably the most popular island near Bangkok, Ko Samet is a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Samet offers the convenience of being a close bus ride away from Bangkok if flights are not an option for you, and the island offers all the sun, beaches, and resort necessary to fulfill your demands.
There are many, many other beach destinations in Thailand, all of which are fabulous. The above just happen to be a few which most mirror the Cancun experience of sun, beach, clear water, and great food with some hot nightlife.

For you first-timers and maybe not-so first time visitors to Cancun, there are really two Cancuns to get to know. Locals know them as the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) and El Centro (downtown), and both have their charm and pitfalls, advantages and disadvantages. We’ll take a look at a few highlights from both the city and the island here, to help you make the most of your vacation time and dollar. Generally, the Hotel zone is a bit more touristy, expensive, and party happy whereas downtown Cancun el Centro has slightly more culture and some more affordable living options in the form of budget hotels and cheaper restaurants.
Hotel Zone
Shopping: Luxury Avenue, the newer section of Plaza Kukulcan, is home to the world-renown boutiques like Cartier and Louis Vuitton. Just ten minutes away is La Isla, an outdoor shopping village with over 200 shops, restaurants, bars, and you can catch the game at the world’s smallest Hooters!

While Cancun has rapidly gained a reputation as a nightlife destination (especially during Spring Break), it is so much more than the crazy dance-on-the-table nightclubs you see on late-night cable TV. There are plenty of alternatives in both the Hotel Zone and the city to enjoy your vacation in the Mexican Caribbean by night.

Renting a car gives you the freedom to fully experience your surroundings. Like most popular vacation spots, Cancun has numerous car rentals shops to choose from. To make your life easier I have taken a look at a few online and compared weekly and daily prices for both economy class cars and Jeep Wrangler. In order to keep the searches as accurate as possible I used June 1st to June 8th 2008 as my search date. All prices are in USD and include taxes. Please keep in mind that these prices are subject to change and these prices should only be used as an example.
1. Auto-rental-cancun.com
These prices were the best I came across. To rent an economy class car for a week it would cost $211.20 and include unlimited milage, loss damage waiver (LDW), collision damage waiver (CDW), additional liability insurance (ALI), and personal accident insurance (PAI). If you are under 25 it would cost an additional $5 a day which would total a little less then $250. This car can be rented at about $30 a day.
For a Jeep Wrangler you should expect to pay around $55 a day or $369 with everything included (around $410 if you are under 25)
2. Econocarrental.com
An economy class car would cost $35 a day or $219 a week and included ALI, CDW, LDW, PAI, transportation to pick up the car, legal assistance, and two drivers would be permitted. An additional fee of $5 a day for drivers under 25.
A Jeep would cost $69 a day or $379 with the same features as above. Read more
