For you first-timers and maybe not-so first time visitors to Cancun, there are really two Cancuns to get to know. Locals know them as the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) and El Centro (downtown), and both have their charm and pitfalls, advantages and disadvantages. We’ll take a look at a few highlights from both the city and the island here, to help you make the most of your vacation time and dollar. Generally, the Hotel zone is a bit more touristy, expensive, and party happy whereas downtown Cancun el Centro has slightly more culture and some more affordable living options in the form of budget hotels and cheaper restaurants.
Hotel Zone
Shopping: Luxury Avenue, the newer section of Plaza Kukulcan, is home to the world-renown boutiques like Cartier and Louis Vuitton. Just ten minutes away is La Isla, an outdoor shopping village with over 200 shops, restaurants, bars, and you can catch the game at the world’s smallest Hooters!
Dining: Dine lagoon-side at Catorce-Grill 14, Puerto Madero and Harry’s (all near the Ritz-Carlton), or try lesser-known favorites like La Palapa by Pok ta Pok Golf Course.
Fun: Jet skiing, parasailing, snorkeling and SCUBA diving are all activities you can enjoy at any number of reputable outfits like Aquaworld and AquaTours.
El Centro:
Shopping: Tulum Avenue is the heart of the city, and the whole area has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Bargain hunters hit the real market at Mercado 23 out by the firehouse. Fewer people speak English there, but adventurous travelers will make out with handsome bargains.
Dining: Try authentic Yucatecan regional food at El Pocito, or have fresh seafood in Market 28.
Fun: Treat yourself to a day at the markets, or catch a Mexican league baseball game or Atlante pro soccer game (both stadiums are back-to-back near Wal-Mart downtown). Both Downtown and the Hotel Zone have plenty to offer the millions of visitors Cancun gets every year.
So conclusion on the Hotel zone versus Downtown Cancun..
If you’re looking for authenticity and local charm, El Centro is a must-see during your vacation. Those of you seeking a more upscale experience, and not to mention the beaches (which are the area’s greatest draw after all), should plan to spend most of your time in the Hotel Zone.
